“With the new „Contemporary“ 17-70mm ƒ/2.8-4 OS HSM „C“, Sigma’s created a smart and stylish upgrade to its kit-lens alternative. There’s a good recipe for sales here: make it look awesome, and don’t jack up the price too much.”

“If you have an APS-C sensor in your camera and are looking for an affordable yet quality lens you’ll hardly ever take off that body as you tote it around for the next couple years, you’ll be hard pressed to find a better option than the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 Macro OS HSM.”

DXOmark.com

“The Sigma 17-70mm has a DxO Mark Score of 15. This makes it the 5th best APS-C zoom lens tested on the Canon EOS 7D. However if you look at the scores in detail, for sharpness it ranks number 3, ahead of any canon APS-C lens. This does exclude all of the immensely good lenses designed to cover full frame 35mm but they generally have a price tag to match the larger format. The score of 15 overall and of 9 P-Mpix for sharpness makes this a very serious contender. Distortion and vignetting at 0.4% and 0.7EV are at the lower end of the range of scores in this group, transmission differs from the stated value by just under 0.5EV which is on a par with other lenses of this type and chromatic aberration is well controlled, better than most.”

“When I received this lens in for review, I had quite a number of dispositions. First off, I personally hate zoom lenses and think that their quality is far inferior to primes. While I still believe that, I was humbled by this lens. Not only was the quality good, but it is from a third party that has traditionally been known to not have their act together when it comes to quality control. Granted, this has been long gone now with the company’s rebranding and new strategies, but we didn’t think it would apply this much to their new lenses not meant for the professional. There isn’t much bad to say about the Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4 DG OC HSM. It’s a wonderful lens and if I didn’t own all full frame DSLRs, I’d even consider purchasing it. The ergonomics of the lens are just as sweet as their art lenses and the quality is right up there to match. Indeed, Sigma’s quality is really, really astounding at this point and we’re floored by what they can do now. We highly recommend the new 17-70mm f2.8-4 DG OS HSM.”

“The Sigma 17-70 mm C is the first Sigma lens in the Contemporary series, which Sigma is described by Sigma as: „High performance, yet compact and lightweight, true all-round lenses“. If you take a look at the results of our Sigma 17-70 mm C review, this description certainly applies for this lens. This is actually an inexpensive fast all-round zoom lens with high optical quality and a good built-in image stabilization. The visible distortion at focal lengths below 24mm is simply corrected afterwards using software, if necessary. Compared to its predecessor, the Sigma 17-70 mm Contemporary is not only 30% lighter, but also much less prone to flare. The AF is also more silent. When you are not completely satisfied with the performance of your kit lens, then you should definitely consider buying this lens. In terms of optical performance, the Sigma 17-70 mm f/2.8-4 ‚C‘  proved to be a bit better in our reviews than the more expensive Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM. And the Sigma lens offers a faster aperture too.”

“Those looking for a high quality general purpose zoom lens for their APS-C format DSLR could do a lot worse than this lens from Sigma. As well as sporting a very useful zoom range, having a maximum aperture slightly faster than normal will help with shooting in low light, as will the optical stabilisation, which works very well. Sharpness in the centre of the frame is very good throughout the zoom range, and the close focusing ability is great for close up shooting. It is by no means a perfect lens, but it does offer good quality and useful features at a good value price.”

„Out of the frying pan into the fire” – this idiom perhaps describes the newest moves of Sigma the best. Firstly I completely don’t understand why they launched a successor of a very well done 17-70 mm OS model. Just to gain those several dozen grams? I admit it doesn’t persuade me at all – after all this lens is not a ‘pancake’ or a small, handy instrument for which such changes would be essential and noticeable. The improvement of the performance at longer focal lengths, both in the centre and on the edge of the frame, is a nice thing. It’s a pity, though, that it was done at the expense of image quality at 17 mm. The edge of the frame took the brunt of it – images you get there are only moderately useful, struggling with noticeable coma, distortion, chromatic aberration and vignetting as well. A smaller casing also provided less possibilities to dampen down flares correctly so the work against bright light got worse.”

„My final verdict is that if you can live without a constant f/2.8 aperture and you want a phenomenal lens for a low price. This is the lens to get. I am not embarrassed to say that this lens replaces my Nikkor 17-55 f/2.8G*.”
